Below are some prompts and exercises to help you understand why your shot missed the target.
Review
What shot did you shoot and what exactly happened? Describe what you tried, what you expected to happen, and how it all actually went.
What factors contributed to it not working out? Resources? Time? Unexpected life events? All of it?
What did you have control over, and what was completely outside your control? Be honest about both.
What assumptions did you make going in that turned out to be wrong? What did you believe would happen that didn't?
Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently if you took the same shot again?
Practice
Interview Your Failure: pretend your failure is coming in for an on-camera interview. Create a list of questions you’d want to ask it. Then reverse the roles and try to answer them in as much detail as possible.
Case Study: treat your missed shot as something that happened to someone else and prepare a case study for that person. Name that person if it helps. What did they try? What happened? Why didn't it work? What should they take away from it? Some tips for future success. Then read it back and notice what advice you'd give this “person” that you struggle to give yourself.
Myth Bust: write down everything you currently believe this failure says about you, your abilities, or your future. Then challenge each statement with two lists: What actually happened? What am I adding to the story?
